Co...What's Rumpelstiltskin up to in this story? Consider that 1) he gives gold to the miller's daughter, and she gives him a necklace and then a ring in exchange; 2) he tries to make a deal with her to get her first child, so it sounds like he wants to be cast in the role of father; and 3) he tries to give her his name; this is what still happens in (most) marriages today, the woman takes the man's name (even though he goofed this part of it up). To me these three things all say he wanted to marry her.

Now, Rumpelstiltskin has higher standards than the other two, since he says "something alive is dearer to me than all the treasures in the world", and the other two are hung up on riches - the king wants the miller's daughter because of her gold, and the miller's daughter sets up an equivalence between life and money by trying to buy Rumpelstiltskin off with all the riches of the kingdom. But still Rumpelstiltskin seems like a bit of a klutz to me, because of the name goof-up and because he was willing to give so much help to a girl he didn't even know. So maybe the king and the miller's daughter deserved each other, and Rumpelstiltskin deserved what he got.

So I think the moral of the story is this: "Never give any money to a miller's daughter unless she actually deserves it. And stop shooting yourself in the foot."Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15138328086699919665noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4506693061066226676.post-44565506260320676782016-05-02T14:16:50.014-07:002016-05-02T14:16:50.014-07:00Hello Linda,

I'm curious what reference you found that says Rumpelstiltskin wanted to eat the child. Most fairies wanted to make them slaves, wives, or offer them to hell. Of course almost every mention of männlein I've found makes them out to be nicer helpful spirits. Hobgoblins are most often kindly Welsh fairies that clean the house. Though they are annoying and fond of pranks. I suppose you could think of them as that obnoxious older brother. On occasion a hobgoblin would turn dangeorous, as all fairies occasionally do.

Still, as I said I'm curious what story or bit of lore you found that ever references a männlein eating a child?Nukiukhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03348251039053145580noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4506693061066226676.post-56965200914585480672016-05-02T14:04:47.550-07:002016-05-02T14:04:47.550-07:00From research I did. But it won't be revealed until I finish writing both the Anthology and matching music EP, "Fairy tales of Murder and Mayhem" by Slippery When Wet. These tales have all been so sanitized for the middle class. My daughter is the Brave Princess (using The Enchanted Pig for inspiration), my older son is going to be the Hardworking Polite Hero, and my younger son is going to be the Youngest Brother/Fool (as long as no one ever tells him I used that word!) If you have any more suggestions for source stories for these characters, I would love to hear them. (BTW, I love that you grew up in Alaska and went to college in Hawaii! We were leaving by the midnight train from Moscow to St. Petersburg. After dinner we said good-bye to our parents and entered the sleigh which was to take us to Moscow. Our road led through a forest called the Silver Forest which stretched for miles without a single dwelling or sign of human life. It was a clear, lovely moonlight night. Suddenly in the heart of the forest, the horses reared, and to our stupefaction we saw a train pass silently between the trees. The coaches were brilliantly lit and we could distinguish the people seated in them. Our servants crossed themselves, and one of them exclaimed under his breath: "The powers of evil!" Nicholas and I were dumbfounded; no railroad crossed the forest and yet we had all seen the mysterious train glide by."

This is a fragment of "lost Splendour" an autobiographic book by Prince Felix Youssupov, (the one who apparently killed Rasputin), we know this man lied about some things (the whole Rasputin complot) but who knows, this is suppossed to be a real life story, and I think that if he lied about this experience maybe he heard someone else telling a similar tale, but of course, I don't know the truth.

Sorry for the long post, and the poor grammar, but greetings from Mexico.lirio morshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02007562648986184511noreply@blogger.com
